New Year's Resolutions

I don’t like making resolutions usually because I end up breaking them in the first month. Last year’s was to floss everyday, that lasted a week. So maybe instead of resolutions maybe I will call them goals or how I want 2010 to go, things to accomplish. One of course it to get healthy and to reach my goal weight of 145 by October. I’m going to break them down by month also to have goals to reach and keep my butt on track. Here’s the break down….
January – 15 pounds…230
February – 15 pounds…215
March – 15 pounds…200
April – 15 pounds…185
May – 10 pounds…175
June – 10 pounds…165
July – 10 pounds…155
August – 5 pounds…150
September – 5 pounds…145 GOAL!!!!!!

Second goal is to get the house organized and keep it that way. Like I said yesterday, I need to get rid of clutter in my life to be open to all the opportunities that have been missed because of all the unnecessary crap that has been getting in the way. I can’t wait to walk into my house and feel comfortable again. I’ve just let it go to much now, time to take charge again and make sure it gets done and stays done.

Third goal is to get the money organized and budgeted so that I can save more than my 401k, for things like vacations and holidays and everything else along with a little nest egg. Which means “gulp” giving up my coffee habit. I know I discussed it before but now is the time! I have a coffee maker at home so if I really need it I can have it there and have my Starbucks as a treat once a week or every other week. It also means I will have to be better organized with having lunches made to just grab out of the fridge and go. I also need to figure out were the rest of the money is being spent and try to curb some of that too. Then get my few credit cards paid off and the rest should start to fall into place.

This is going to be a great year with a lot of changes for the better a more focused and organized life, making it easier for me to reach my first goal which is the healthy body, okay smoking hot body! :) It will also create at a better environment for my family, I’m looking forward to 2010 it feels like a fresh start. Happy New Year to everyone, I hope you all have a fulfilling and exciting new year.

New Years Resolutions...

Hello ya’ll,

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I know mine was very special. We went to Disneyland during Christmas. Mainly because my son was born on Christmas Eve. He had the best time because he’s at an age now where he can go on almost all the rides. It was nuts there though! Way too crowded for me. I don’t mind waiting in line for rides, but when I have to wait in a sea of shoulder to shoulder people to get out of the park… (who are mostly rude) It gets me a bit claustrophobic.

So I tackled Disneyland with the idea that I would only splurge on items that I can only really get there. If I can get it at home, then I would pick a salad so that I could save myself for the real good stuff. Mornings were mainly a cup of coffee and possibly a bite of a pastry or part of a full egg breakfast.  We had brought healthy snacks for back at the hotel but for the most part they went untouched. For some reason I felt seriously full the entire trip, which helped.  To give you an idea of how the trip started off, here’s a picture of our first stop in LA. Lunch at Pink’s…

Yes I ate every last bite of mine, and felt horribly sick after word. The entire trip I made choices of “do I want this soda or desert with dinner?” I did not go hog-wild while there. It also helps being on a very strict budget. I never felt deprived or hungry. The amount of walking you do in the park is awesome. And Tarzan’s Tree is a fantastic buns and thigh workout! my muscles were twitching after climbing that thing several times.

Surprisingly enough when I got home I decided to weigh myself so I knew what the damage from finals week and the trip was. I had only gained 1 pound! I thought for sure I would be up 5 pounds. Phew!

Santa brought me the new Wii Active Trainer. Wow… it’s awesome! Far superior to Wii Fit. With journals to keep track of progress, eating and activity, a progressive workout and a 30 day challenge to jump-start you… it really feels like you have a personal trainer. The workouts are fantastic. I’m 3 days into it and yesterday my legs were so sore I was walking funny. Every day the Wii chooses the workout and it keeps track of how well you do each excercise so that the next day it can make it harder if you’re doing well at it. Since starting on Sunday I’ve already lost that pound.

Current weight 150 lbs.

Most current body shot.

A little under 3 months to go and a little more than 20 pounds to go. I think it’s totally obtainable. The next thing to tackle is New Years. I won’t be worrying about drinking since I probably won’t be. But we will be going to a family friends get together. There will be crab, and steak… oh and numerous finger foods all day long. Bethenny Frankle from Housewives of New York and author of her new book “The Skinnygirl Dish” looks at our bodies as a bank account. Check her out. I love her ideas and will be purchasing her book. http://www.bethenny.com/index.html. So I will be taking that into account tomorrow.

What’s my New Years Resolution? Don’t have one. I don’t feel you need a big event to get you motivated to be the best person you can be. Why not start today? I do know that I want to start dancing again this upcoming year.. and if anyone knows of a reasonably priced dance studio in the Fresno area, please let me know! I hope you all have a great and safe New Years. See you next year!

Healthy Ways To Lose Weight

It’s as good a bet as any that the resolution of losing weight, exercising more or living a healthier life is part of the list that you made.Instead, you should go for a type of diet that will teach you how to lead a healthier lifestyle in terms of your food consumption, as well as your exercise and fitness routine.
By doing so, you will not just lose all the unwanted pounds that you gained over the years, you will also have a leaner body, stay away from the medical conditions associated with being overweight, and have a healthier lifestyle overall.
Top 10 list of the healthy ways to lose weight:

  • When you plan your meals in advance, you can really think about which food items are good for your health and will not put a dent in your dieting plan.
  • Add more ‘real foods’ to your grocery cart rather than stocking up on processed food itemsThis is something that a lot of people are guilty of. Did you know that most of the common ailments and diseases that people experience on a daily basis come from consuming too much processed foods?
  • Eat smaller meals, more frequently throughout the day.
  • Slowly savor your food and stop eating once you feel that you’re about to get full.
  • Prepare healthy snacks for yourself when you need to be on-the-go.
  • Maintain a dietary journal.
  • Just like planning your meals in advance, keeping a dietary journal will allow you to keep track of your calorie consumption.
  • If you do have to eat out, choose to have a serving of salad and a turkey sandwich – and skip on upgrading to large servings.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Perhaps the number one mistake that dieters make is setting unrealistic goals for themselves.

  • If you are on a quest to shed off those excess pounds for good, start with a smaller goal.
  • Be always on the move.

After following the aforementioned tips when it comes to losing weight through your diet, all your efforts should be combined with some good old physical exertion. By following these healthy ways to lose weight, you will be able to reach your fitness and weight loss goals right.

My weight loss attempts started with I was in high school and carried on through my adult life and I was never very successful.  Sure I would lose weight 10-20 pound but it would eventually return and add some weight as we went.   Only twice in my life do I recall being “fit” not thin and that was when I did the Atkins diet and lost close to 50 pounds but again gained it all back plus some.  The other time was when I got married,  I had just graduated from the police academy and was in shape, running 3 miles a day and feeling good.  I married my wife 2 months after graduating and moved out-of-state so was unable to persue law enforcement and thus lost my motivation to keep the weight off.

At my peak 2 years ago (almost exactly) I weighted 348 Pounds and on a 5′10″ frame, well lets just say that I was huge.  I had been spared any diseases associated with obesity but was told that I f I did not change then I would more than likely get some of them.   So I slowly started to work on it, but did not get to motivated.   I got down to 320 after 1.5 years and thought that was good but I knew it wasnt.  So I started to do light walking,  exercise in general is hard when you weight that much so I started slow and slowly it is starting to come off.  I started getting serious this last September.

On my youngest son’s birthday I started on the HCG diet and in a matter of 2 months I lost 25 pounds and I have kept it off thus far.  I am currently starting on my second round in hopes of getting to a weight where I can start running again.  Stay tuned and I will up date you on how I am doing.

New Year's Special--$99!

Omaha’s newest bootcamp, SG Human Performance (can also be found as Nebraska Kettlebell) is offering a New Year’s Special!  We understand that a lot of people start of the New Year with resolutions to work out more, eat healthier, lose weight, etc and we want to be there to help you reach those goals! Instead of joining a boring gym and either working out on your own (and spending hours doing the same long, monotous routine on the treadmill or elliptical)  or paying high dollar amounts for a trainer and quitting after a month, why not join a bootcamp where you can work along with other people with the same goals as you and instructors that will help motivate you and keep you on track and get results in half the time?

At Nebraska Kettlebell, we want to seperate ourselves from the many other bootcamps around.  We want to help you reach your goals, whatever they may be- but we also want to make sure that you are doing what your body needs to be doing.  Other bootcamps will promise “drop 10 pounds in 4 weeks” or whatever it may be and put you through Biggest Loser like conditions where, yeah, you’ll kick your butt in the 4 weeks you are there and most likely get injured down the road or worse, gain any weight back that you lost.  We want to help you and teach you to make a lifestyle change not just a temporary one. Yes, you will “get your butt kicked” and we will work you hard.  You will learn about wise diet choices as well as good exercises for you that you can do at home and in class.   Whether you want to lose weight, gain muscle or just hit a ball harder…whatever it may be, we want to teach you how to move your body efficiently and correctly so you can excel at whatever it is you want to do…that is why our bootcamp focuses on lifestyle changes and not just a “quick fix”. Nebraska Kettlebell is the bootcamp you need to help you become lean, fit and strong (sexy and strong is more like it!).  Make 2010 be your best year yet!

So that being said, Nebraska Kettlebell is offering a hugely discounted New Year’s special for all your resolutioners at there who are trying to figure out what you want to do in the New Year!  When you sign up and attend a class orientation by January 31st, you will get your first 3 months of bootcamp at $99/month!  That’s over a $300 savings- just by signing up and attending by January 31st!  So you need to act now and get in on this savings. Don’t wait til February—this offer will be gone by then.  Space is limited in our classes- so you need to act now! We wouldn’t want you to miss out this awesome opportunity.  Go to www.sghumanperformance.myvolo.ca to get set up and signed up for an orientation so you can get in on this $99 bootcamp special!

Attaching a Goal to a Mantra

Ready for the challenge!!

Piggybacking off today’s previous post …

So my SELF subscription still hasn’t run out yet, which means I’m still reading each issue I get.

Though I loathe the magazine editor’s ‘tude (and find her lame excuses pitiful) following the Kelly Clarkson cover debacle in September, I genuinely like the content of SELF and, in fact, came across another great article yesterday that both rejuvenated and inspired me to get back on the healthy wagon and stay there.

I can’t find the article online, but it was basically little journal entries of a woman’s journey as she lost 28 lbs. over the course of a year.

Reading her words — including her ups and downs — reminded me so much of my own journey, and of my former self … the dedicated dieter who attempted weight loss just once and it worked like a charm.

Naturally, I don’t want to go down that path again if it will result in triggering any disordered behaviors, but the truth is, I do need to make some changes (as I noted earlier) and it took reading her journey — and seeing her numbers go down each week — to re-inspire me.

I don’t know if my company is going to do its wellness program again this year, but if we do (or even if we don’t) I have rejoined Weight Watchers Online and am starting anew, like a fresh-faced newbie.

Basically, what it boils down to is this: I have kept off roughly 10 percent of the 18 percent of my (maintainable) body weight I lost five years ago. Not terrible, but not great either. I’d like to be comfortable in my clothes and some do feel tighter (especially post-holidays). And while I’ve never stopped counting Points, I did stop my online subscription, … and I think this could be just the motivation I need.

You see, my six-year WW anniversary (i.e., when I joined) is April 13. For six years I’ve been on WW. And I haven’t been doing so hot lately. So how amazing would it be to have lost these nagging 10 lbs by then, slowly/steadily? It’s not a crazy amount to lose, nor is it impossible. We’re talking over the course of four months, too.

I know in my heart of hearts if I ate cleaner and could nip emotional eating and impulse buys in the bud, I would be successful once again at Weight Watchers because it DOES work; the program works when you work it. It worked for me back then and my heart was totally into it then.

But I’ve given in to entitlement over the past two years or so, and I’ve not been giving it my all at all.

And I feel ready to do it once again. So here I am, giving you my word that I’m going to do my best to really embrace my mantra of “my body is my temple” and if I can manage to ditch these nagging 10 lbs, awesome. And if not, oh well. I’ll have tried, right?

Don’ worry, I won’t be posting my weight or anything I eat here — this isn’t a weight loss blog — but I did want to share with you, my readers, that I’m going to going back to an old flame, one I need to rekindle my relationship with, so to speak.

I’m also viewing things from a different lens, as I’m coming at it from a very different place than I was six years ago. Yes, I’m carrying a lot more baggage. But I also think I’m carrying more wisdom, too. I’m older and know myself better now. I also know what works and doesn’t work for me and am secure in that institutional knowledge.

Therapy helped me see my structured/Type-A personality as an asset; it’s time to use it to my advantage yet again. And I don’t fear falling into old traps; I know how ugly that path is and don’t want to set so much as a toe on it. I won’t put myself through that agony.

So this might sound like a New Year’s resolution, but it’s really part of my broader picture of wanting to embrace my body as a temple. And I really believe attaching a tangible goal to an intangible philosophy (mantra) will help me achieve this goal.

After all, I’ve done it before, and believe I have the tools to do it again. I just got a little too comfortable, and it’s starting to show. So … with my confidence coming back, I’m ready for a new challenge!

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Melissa

Today... it begins...

As I said yesterday, I will be posting ever day through the holidays… They will be short posts though due to all the family stuff going on over those days. Today I make my return to the gym for my first training session. I am hoping that, with today’s meeting, I can establish a regiment that will be both safe for me to do and one that will be effective. I am at 450 lbs and I want to be between 220 to 240 lbs. I know that it is a long way away, but I know I can do it!

I am going to find a way to set up something that will show the progress in lbs on my blogs… I have seen meters on other sites,  I am sure that I can find one to post here. If any of you know where I can find it, please let me know. Please keep me in your thoughts tonight and in the coming days as I really need your support to keep going to the gym and get it to be part of my everyday routine. Once it is part of my everyday routine, it is something that will be a lot harder to fail at.

I will talk to you tomorrow and let you know how things went. I will also be posting a new video tomorrow night, I didn’t get to on Sunday…

Take care,

Kenny

Eating Healthy Foods!

Healthy eating habits have forgotten. You can see everywhere, people are lined up at the drive-thru and gouging themselves with fast foods. And I hope this article will open your eyes to some benefits of healthy eating.

A healthy list of food choices for a nutritious diet includes fruits, vegetables, and proteins. The health benefits of these foods help prevent illness, flu and diseases.

Fruit
Fruits are high in vitamin C. This vitamin helps the immune system and keeps illnesses at bay. These vitamins contain essential nutrients the body needs to stay healthy. You can try apples strawberries, oranges, lemons and blueberries.

Vegetables
Adding vegetables to your daily meals will provide other vitamins and nutrition. The health benefits of eating tomatoes and leafy greens such as spinach helps fight against heart disease and even some types of cancers.

Eating fruits and vegetables in their most natural state is the best, but if you have to cook them try to steam or boil them to keep some nutritional value. Also avoid adding an excess of saturated fats such as butters and oils. These things just take away nutrition and add fat to your diet.More…

Getting down to the wire

It’s been a while since I last posted but I just didn’t feel like updating on sad/redundant things that have been going on with myself.

That being said I have REAL NEWS: I got the call and my surgery is set for Thursday this week AND my insurance has approved it all. No questions, no appeals, nada. This is something for which I am HIGHLY thankful for. This is my Christmas gift to myself. Now I can focus only on the healing/losing/self-appreciation part in 2010 instead of  walking around in the limbo I was in these past few weeks.

Currently they have me on a liquid diet that I absolutely LOATHE. I have yet to find a brand that is low in carbs that doesn’t taste like absolute sh*t. This is one of the reasons I couldn’t stay on SlimFast when I tried it two summers ago.  Please note I CAN have a sweet tooth from time to time however after drinking one of these things I feel like I must drink 3 cups of water just to get the gag-worthy ’sweet’ taste from my mouth. Today I begin my clear-liquids only part of the diet and I am highly looking forward to having chicken broth and apple juice (who would have thought that this is what I would be reduced to?).  Once more I am reminding myself that this is all for the greater good.

I made a calculation last night: at 8lbs per month (given, of course, that I am capable of losing 2lbs/week) I should hope to reach my goal by this time next year.  This is the greatest motivating thing for me.  Even at the midway point that I will be in for this summer I can already anticipate sooo much of my life being given back to me.  If it weren’t for the chaos of the holidays I would probably start charting all the things that I will do each week for this coming summer of 2010.

Outlook: Hopeful

Weight Loss Diet – Weight loss Diet Tips

Good news Vinegar helps you losing weight but is it safe to take vinegar in your daily diet ?
Lets find out

Central Research Institute, Japan Scientists, suggest that people lose weight with vinegar.

Scientists tested the effect of vinegar on laboratory mice by adding 0.3% or 1.5% vinegar solution to their daily meals. For six weeks the mice were receiving vinegar solution with calorie-rich meals and kept under observation;. The results after six-week experiment were amazing “vinegar” group weighted 10% less than the control group of mice.

The reason why vinegar helps in losing weight is its chemical properties which activates genes present in body of mice which in turn produces enzymes for fatty acid oxidation.

According to research vinegar is safe to use in daily diet but in appropriate proportion only.

Here is a Vinegar Dressing Salad for weight loss

Add equal parts of red wine vinegar and olive oil with a dash of pepper. Use this dressing on your salad, to make a super meal- high in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. Add some protein with lean meat to make it complete. Olive oil contains healthy fats that benefit your heart and keep it healthy.

So that’s all about a vinegar weight loss diet, But there is a more efficient weight loss diet I ever came a cross and most amazing thing is I used it to drop my 23 lbs in just 2 weeks.

Tomorrow: Starting Over Again

There’s something about the seventeenth time you’ve made the same mistake that is humbling and tends to bring about a feeling of despair.  How could I do THAT again?  Of all the thing, that’s the one thing I know NOT to do, the one thing I know how to avoid…and yet I do it.  You know exactly where it leads yet you often feel powerless to stop it.  Like a deer staring into the headlights of an approaching car you have plenty of time to get out-of-the-way if only you didn’t feel ensnared by gawking at your own error (not to mention the feeling that why bother stopping it in the first place).

I’ve been stuck in this funk for a while now.  I’ve lost a lot of what I gained over the last two years.  My edge has dulled and my inspiration vanished.  The world seems a bit less bright and novelty has long since given way to monotony.

I know the only real solution is to get back out in the yard exercising: flipping tires, tossing bowling balls, sprinting, etc.  But I feel so uninspired.  You’ll only end up getting sick again, the flu, a cold, something will derail you.  So says the obnoxious guy on my shoulder.   I would just flick him off if I wasn’t so damn lazy.  Plus he makes me feel good, the foods and activities he chooses are some of my favorites.

Tomorrow I won’t be doing a lot other than trying to eat right, getting in some moderate exercise, and seeking out the inspiration I lost.  If I can find the latter the other things will come soon enough.  If I can’t I am doomed to be stuck in this spiral.  And even I don’t like the sound of that.

Setback

72.3 said the scales today.

That’s one kilo heavier than last week. Bah humbug.

I didn’t eat anything off-track.

I just had three nights where I drank champagne instead of water.

And the scales are paying me back already.

Oops.

Oh well, back on the horse. Back on the wagon.

happy balls

is it just me, or are the holidays the wrong time to begin any sort of diet lifestyle change?  i’ve tried this before and it had never worked.  it could be because i like to eat, my family likes to eat, my family complains if i don’t eat, and there are so many scrumptious yumtious goodies to have.  i mean who doesn’t want happy balls?

Pre-Training Day 10

Time : 36′17″  Pace : 16′12″

Back to my hilly route again, and I feel much better for it. Its not so much the fact that I went faster again (although that is nice) its the fact that the hill really makes me feel like I worked hard and gave myself a proper workout.

Today is my first of my Wednesday Weigh-ins. So its only actually a few days since my last one, but it means I am now in synch with the rest of RF for my weigh-ins.

Start Weight 21st 9lb Current Weight 20st 13lb This Week -2lb Total Loss -10lb

So seems I am still losing weight which is good. Speaking of which, Breakfast Time!

Avoiding those holiday pounds

It’s that time of year. Every time you turn around, there’s another Christmas party filled with tempting holiday snacks that go right to your waistline. Here are some tips to avoid putting on the pounds this month:

  • Squeeze in exercise whenever possible.
  • Leave the car at home and walk to holiday light displays (but be sure to wear reflective clothing!).
  • If you like to jog, look for an upcoming race to train for. The Cowtown races are right around the corner (February 27, 2009 – click here for race events). North Hills Hospital is an official hospital for The Cowtown Marathon races, which include a family 5K and adult 10K.
  • If your party is really hopping, get out on the dance floor. Dancing is great exercise.
  • Do 10-minute workouts several times a day. Research shows three 10-minute workouts are as effective as one 30-minute session.
  • On shopping trips, take a few extra laps around the mall. Or, you can also park in the back row (which you’ll probably have to do anyway).
  • Eat something healthy before going to a party. If you’re not starving, you can sample and savor buffet offerings without stuffing yourself.
  • It’s normal to crave carbs during times of stress. Grab a whole grain roll instead of cookies or pecan pie.
  • Many people crave salty, crunchy foods when stressed. Crunch away, but try celery sticks and carrots. Go easy on the dips and dressing.

And most importantly, try to get some sleep. Doing so, will reduce stress, and make your holidays a whole lot happier.

Who the heck decides to make weight loss a priority over the Holidays?

That is the million dollar question today as I’m greeted with goodies galore walking into my office this morning.  Chocolate, sweet rolls, candy, oodles of temptations.  All the while I’m trying to convince myself that really, it’s a *good* thing that I started when I did.  I’m not into New Year’s resolutions, and if I waited until after the holidays, I’d be making a defacto New Year’s resolution.

Crap.  I need to exercise self control.

And the winner is...

In this corner, weighing in @ a 20% drop in weight is…Nelley!

1000’s of workout hours, 100’s of healthy meals carefully planned out, dozens of supportive friends and family members, 9 health-minded gals, 6 month timeline, goal setting of 1-2lbs per week, 1 cash prize, 0 excuses.

Nelley - Up & coming rapper

Thank you scale, thank you girls and thank you dear, sweet motivating $$$.

This award means so much to me. First of all, I would like to thank God, without whom I never would have had the courage to launch my rapping career – oh wait. Wrong speech. That’s my 2011 best new artist Grammy award speech. Stay tuned for that one but in the meantime…(shuffling papers)

Ok, here we go:

First of all, I’d like to thank water, of which I drank 9+ glasses per day for the past 6 months. In addition – I’d like to thank readily available restrooms for your support with this endeavour.

I’d also like to thank Taco Bell the other night and my body’s resulting reaction to it as a reminder that cheap, greasy food in large quantities (although delectably delicious) is not made for a healthier body. I would also like to apologize to my good friend who was literally trapped in the enclosed ‘Taco Bell reaction space’ with me as we traveled up to Whistler, BC. You truly are a trooper and I thank you for that.

Thank you to the hardcore trainers @ crossfitwestside for repeatedly kicking my arse twice a week and making me lift weights heavier than I imagined (they made me dead lift 225lbs!) and doing workouts I never thought possible (150 squats followed by 75 sit-ups in under 5 minutes- say what??)

Peace out to the naturalistic dietitian and health foods specialist @ Dynamic By Nature who finally confirmed my belief that diet and processed low fat foods are crap and that organic, all natural full fat foods (in smaller portions) are the way to go.

Our house was just past the 2nd mountain over there

Of course, I can’t forget to thank my dear, sweet parents for this past summer. Although they did rent a wonderful home for us to use, they opted to go carless AND chose a rental home that was a 35 minute walk from EVERYTHING in Lahti, Finland. This forced me to walk everywhere and anywhere – 2 to 3 times a day for several weeks. Yah. Thanks for that. Thanks a lot.

Namaste to the hot yoga folks @ Bikram Yoga who generously extended the 7 x90 minute remaining sessions I had for another 6 months. No I haven’t gone since they extended my membership but I’m sure the stress I put on myself to go and then the guilt I felt for not going surely resulted in some burnt calories.

I’d also like to thank that grossly overweight woman walking with a cane at the Cinnabon shop in the Las Vegas airport for reminding me that the perfect topper to a weekend filled with booze, burgers, pizza and fries was the grilled chicken sandwich I had and not the 6 pack of frosting covered baked thigh-busters she was devouring… right?? As a compromise I considered incorporating frosting in the salad somehow.  Luckily sanity won out. Darn sanity.

Props to my favourite British reality TV show – You Are What You Eat as the repeated clips of participants during an actual colonoscopy coupled with bloated, stretched out unhealthy bellies being rubbed and prodded really motivates you to move your butt…and to cringe and look away. Then to peek back again because it’s so gross you can’t believe what they let you see on British TV. Then look away again until you think it’s safe. Then peak and squeal in horror as you see there’s even more flesh to goggle at and prod and squeeze. Then rinse eyeballs and repeat.

Another big thank you to the gross Chinese food restaurant on my block for proving that greasy, shiny Chinese food isn’t always delicious and is sometimes better left to die and rot in the shiny metal chafing dishes from whence it came. Gawd bless.

Shout out to liciousliving, a healthy eating delivery/take out shop based in Toronto and Vancouver where, early on,  I purchased several meals a week from and who inspired me to create several favourites such as:

Maple Smoked Salmon salad;

Maple smoked salmon, red/yellow peppers, spiced walnuts

Dill & Crab Cake Salad;

Organic Crab Cake, fresh dill, red grapes & sliced strawberries

and my famous (to me at least) Shrimp Caesar Salad:

Shrimp, avocado, red peppers & celery

Big ups to Dr. Phil who recommends as you slim down to remove all your larger sized clothing so there’s nothing to fall back into. Great advice but I must have missed the episode on who pays for the new stuff you need to replace the old stuff.  I should ask his pal Maury Povich. If he can track down the 20th man who might be the father, surely he can easily find one who might pay for my new wardrobe.  DNA test optional.

Which brings me to ‘3 Cheers!’ to my roomie, a trend-spotting shopper whose closet, mostly unbeknownst to her, I have raided on numerous occasions. Her extensive wardrobe of beautiful and stylish items seriously bulked up my own baggy and dowdy duds.  Stylish blazers and carefully tailored shirts can go a long way to improve the look of pants that are several sizes too big.  Were she ever to peruse my Facebook photos she would surely note that half my outfits look strangely familiar, hee hee hee.

And a final thank you to the wad of cash. Woo!  It’s not a whole lot but enough to cover my purchase of new runners, workout tops, jogging pants, jeans that fit, work pants that fit (yee gads this is 9-1-1!),  a winter jacket, a workout hoodie, a leather weekend bag, a few winter sweaters from Old Navy, winter boots, rain boots,  a new belt, a blazer from Banana Republic (on sale of course), a couple new shirts, a few blouses and anything else I held off buying for the last 6 months. To put it in perspective, for the past 3 weeks I’ve been using safety pins, a $9 belt on its tightest rung, a dash of hope and a heap-load of prayers to keep my work pants up.

I think it’s finally time to go shopping.

The Final STATS:

Turbo Jam review

What can I say about Turbo Jam (referred to as TJ later) other than I love it! But, since that really doesn’t tell you much, I’ll tell you more about the program and why I like it so much. I suppose I should let you know (due to new product electronic endorsement laws) that I’m not affiliated with Beach Body and haven’t been paid to write this.

Let me first say the one negative and that isn’t directly about the program but rather Beach Body, the company that sells it. Their customer service is pretty bad if you have a problem with your order. They charged me “estimated sales tax”. Since we have no sales tax in Alaska, I tried to call and question this charge. I wound up calling many different numbers (answered with India sounding accents) each referring me to the next after politely explaining why they couldn’t help. One even asked if I was satisfied with his help after not helping. Frustrating.

Anyway, finally someone contacted me via this blog from BeachBody. I called him and had the problem fixed right away (thank you again Pierre!). They even removed the shipping charge to compensate me for my trouble. I’ve read of others who’ve had customer service problems with them too. I would probably order directly from them again though because they sell such great products. Also shipping to Alaska is VERY slow. They don’t give free shipping upgrades to Alaska. I don’t know why since the post office now offers flat rate priority boxes so that price is the same for all 50 states.

Now, here’s the good stuff about Turbo Jam.

The biggest thing is variety. There’s a lot of different workouts. Each workout uses the same 11 moves, but they are all put together different so you don’t get bored yet you don’t have to learn a ton of different moves. BeachBody offers several different TJ packages and you can also find them on e-bay. Beside good all over workouts, there is specific cardio, abs, and strength training. Even a fit ball set. They vary from 20 minutes to an hour in length.

I bought the Maximum Results package. It included 6 workouts: Learn & Burn, 20 Minute, Turbo Sculpt, Cardio Party, Ab Jam, and Punch Kick & Jam. The first 5 were on one DVD and the last was on it’s own. I think because it was put out after the first so it was a “bonus”. There was also a program guide, eating chart, and flash cards explaining the moves. Oh, and weighted gloves which came with instruction sheet. The only thing was the instructions had you putting them on upside down  The weight is supposed to be on the top of your hand, not in the palm.

The results of TJ program are great. Not only do you tone up, but you also slim down quickly. Her 11 moves target every major muscle for great overall workouts and burn a ton of calories. They also improve your balance since you’re twisting and kicking, sometimes at the same time. I’ve lost up to a pound just by doing one session of Cardio Party, even with drinking a lot of water. Talk about a quick result!

The 11 moves are called “Elite 11″. Like I said, they work every major muscle in your body. This includes the chest and back. However, unlike many targeted exercises, they aren’t isolation moves. Instead, they work several different muscle groups at once. Yet, they aren’t bouncy or high impact. Most of all, they are fun never repetitive. That may sound strange since you’re only doing 11 different moves, but she strings them together in routines of several connected moves like a dance.

Some of the moves are easier than others. I’m still having trouble with the one she calls twist. When I first started doing TJ, I tripped all over myself. Still, it was fun so I kept trying. Other than “twist”, I’m able to do the moves without trouble now. Like everyone says, practice makes perfect. That is definitely true of the moves in TJ. If you have any experience with martial arts, dance, or kickboxing they will be easier since they are adaptations from them.

The music with TJ is the greatest. It’s cued perfectly. It’s not just background, but actually part of the workouts. It’s fun and keeps you wanting to move. It’s not the latest dancey, hip-hop, popular radio songs. Instead it’s workout music which truly fits the routines. Muzak on steroids.

I wish more exercise videos paid as much attention to music selection as these do. It’s never annoying like some videos can be. In fact, instead of the option to turn off the music, they have the option to cut the voice track down so you can go with the music better.

I don’t know why, but I feel I’m in the studio with them. The attitude and enthusiasm just pours out of the screen. I’ve never felt that way from an exercise video before. They talk to you, not at or down to you. The workout is over before I’m ready sometimes, I’m enjoying it that much. TJ is the only program where I’ve never anxiously anticipated the end of a workout.

I’m really excited about TJ. It’s fun, never boring or repetitive. I’ve highly recommended it to others, including some fitness instructors at my gym. There is a group version for gyms called Turbo Kick. If I had the time, I’d try to become a fitness instructor just to teach that and water aerobics. It’s for all levels of fitness and ability. And the results speak for themselves.

Be Prepared!!

Are you prepared for all the upcoming holiday food events?  Here are a few tips on how to say ‘No’ to the foods that aren’t on plan this Christmas season!

“Just a small piece,” they say, as hot apple pie wafts under your nose, “You can’t live on salads forever.” I am feeling tempted. “You don’t want any of my Black Forest cake?” they ask, looking dejected. “You’ve always loved my cake. Come on, it’s a special occasion.”  Sigh…

Do these comments seem familiar to you?  They aren’t unusual.  Whether it’s a normal dinner or a holiday meal, food pushers seem to be around when you are least prepared.

This situation doesn’t have to cause you to overeat.  By being diplomatic about how you “just say no” you can avoid both causing hurt feelings and doing damage to your waistline.  Here are a tips on dealing with these situations:

1.  Honesty

Talk to family and friends about your weight-loss efforts. If your family get-togethers always center on a meal, they’re going to find out anyway. If your friends always meet at restaurants, it’s going to come up.

Explain: You are really committed to losing weight and want it to work. By saying no, you’re not trying to offend anyone, it’s just really important for you to keep a close eye on what and how much you eat.

2.  Use Stall Tactics

If dessert starts making its way around the table, say something along the lines of, “I would, but right now I’m stuffed and I just wouldn’t enjoy it.” or “Maybe after a while I’ll have some.” In other words… stall.

For example, you can say that you’ll come back for a piece of cake or pie after you’ve had a walk; once you walk, your craving for something sweet should have passed and it’s easier to give a firm no.

3. “Mm-mm, Good!”

If you anticipate a dessert offer that you can’t refuse, try to eat smaller portions of higher-calorie items during your meal. Then, take a small portion of the dessert. As you take the first few bites of your treat, make sure you give the chef your compliments; she will be less likely to assume that you disliked the dish when you say that firm no to a second helping.

4. Ask for it “To Go”

When offered seconds one too many times, ask for them to be wrapped up so you can take them home. You can always tell the cook you want to be able to enjoy the food later, or that it was so good you want to share it with someone else at home. Whether you eat it later or not is completely up to you — there’s no peer pressure when you are alone!

5. Be Prepared

Sad, but true: In some cases, a food pusher may be hoping you will fail at weight loss. There are those who are driven to sabotage someone trying to lose weight. They may be uncomfortable with your weight loss because of their own weight issues, they might dislike eating “bad” food without you, or they could be jealous or threatened by attention you may be receiving.

Whatever the cause, it is important that you are assertive, but not aggressive (which will only worsen the situation), when you say no. Practice being assertive in similar situations or maybe even while looking into the mirror. It may look silly, but if doing so will help you be stronger when the real thing happens, it’s worth it.

6. The Bottom Line

Even if you can’t find the “right” way to say no, chances are no permanent damage will be done to the relationships in your life when you do, so stick to your guns. It’s not worth avoiding a few ruffled feathers to eat something you truly don’t want to take into your body. You have the right to make your health top priority.

frost fire

Losing seventy-five pounds in five months has all sorts of interesting side effects, some of which I may or may not write about here, but there’s one in particular that I didn’t anticipate.

It’s freaking cold out!

“But, Jonathan Moeller, author of staggering genius!” you might say. “Of course it’s freaking cold out! The temperature is currently six degrees Fahrenheit, plus it’s snowing!”

Yeah, but I used to like weather like this. I used to look forward to December and January, not because of the holidays, but because it was so pleasantly chill outside. I’d take long walks in six degree weather just because I enjoyed it so much; it was the one time of the year when I felt adequately cooled.

Now going outside is actually painful. I never used to wear long-sleeved shirts. Now I don’t like to go outside without a long sleeve shirt, a heavy coat, and a lighter coat under the heavy coat.

Either this winter is much colder, or I just never noticed it before. On the plus side, maybe summer won’t be quite as bad as I remember.

Snacks spoil your healthy eating habit!!

A healthy eating habit gets disturbed if you start consuming snacks regularly. It also disturbs your regular meal routine and nutritional intake. It leads to untimely meals and causes an imbalance in the metabolism. Without realizing, you end up gaining weight in the long run and start overeating. Here are some simple tips to avoid the urge of snacking: • Set a convenient meal routine at regular intervals during the day so that you do not feel uncontrollably hungry. • Try and eat meals on time, if you skip, you feel like munching something meanwhile and this disturbs your regular healthy intake. • Even if you want to have a snack, try choosing low fat and low-calorie choices. You can eat diet crackers and cookies, butter-less popcorn, sugar-free chewing gum, pudding or fruit salads without fatty content or even raw salads with lime. • Aromatherapy does work sometimes if you feel like munching something. Light some scented candles and allow the aroma to spread. Divert your attention to this soothing smell. It actually works! • In order to curb untimely hunger, you can drink water or fresh and natural vegetable or fruit juices. Herbal teas are a great choice but add honey instead of sugar. You may also choose to have non-caffeinated beverages. • Avoid purchasing too much of junk snacks and storing them. Buy snacks which are nourishing than tasty. Only then you would get tempted to have them. • Store healthy stuff in your snack boxes so that even if you want to have a snack session, you do not consume a lot of undesirable food items. • Divert your temptation of munching something by taking up some instant activity that would keep you busy. Engage yourself in some interesting puzzles, stitching, knitting, playing musical instruments, cleaning up your desk or spend some time outside your work desk.

riiiight...

So ok, it’s been a week since I posted and yeah I did notice.  I had a semi-pissed off breakdown tonight at work.  It wasn’t pretty peeps.  I think it was just the culmination of a week full of crap.  That’s really the only thing I can think.  It started off this morning with the 1/2 lb. weight gain and just went down hill from there.  Long story short – I ended up in tears on my lunch break and Jo got an earful.

In other news – I sold my first quilt top this week!  It was totally awesome!  I have a list a mile long of projects that I have to get done by Christmas and not nearly enough time in my day to get it all done!  Also, I would like to give a little shout out to J and B for the lovely Christmas card and box full of fabric – it was so sweet…you guys are awesome and I am looking forward to sending you a gift back in a few months!

In TTC news – insem will probably happen on friday/Sat.  I think this cycle we will only be able to get in one or two so it will be a hail mary pass for sure for us this month.  Here’s to all our Christmas BFP’s!

Small Plates

Tiny Plate of goods, originally uploaded by Shay Aaron.

My next idea for loosing a little poundage is to use smaller plates and bowls. I am using a plate that is a little larger than a side plate. This is just perfect. I have an old bowl, dug out from the back of the cupboards, it holds about a third of my usual bucket!
I have been very good and adhered to the sugarless tea and coffee. Not drinking as much now though… I used to drink it for the sugar boost. Must step up the water intake or my brain will shrivel. I have also kept to the regular meal times… about four hours between each meal… four meals a day. I am now heading for the dance page to joyfully jiggle my lardy bits!

Give Before You Get if You Want Weight Loss

Law of the farm

Weight Loss Follows Law of the Farm

Weight loss is one of those things that follow the law of the farm. You have to invest time and energy before you get any results. But isn’t that like everything else in life that is worth going after. Somehow this message has been lost with the masses who look for quick fixes for almost everything.

We live in an age of the remote control. Everything is available at the press of a button or at the most, a phone call. The modern man today has the lowest amount of patience in the history of the human race. Technology has made advances that allows access to goods, services and information at unimaginable speeds.

If we are to prosper or even survive in the current economy,  speed is the name of the game. The fastest survives and the slowest picks up the crumbs. We have been so deeply programmed with such thinking that some of us have forgotten that our bodies do not work the same way.

A pregnancy still takes 9 months in the current modern age. We cannot express this. A cut or wound will still take a few days to heal. We cannot express this. Yet, why do people go to the ends of the earth to look for a magical weight loss solution that will provide them with the fastest possible results in the shortest possible times. Don’t believe this? Just go to the diet and fitness questions section of Yahoo Answers.

I strongly believe that if there was a magical weight loss pill or program or solution, Oprah would have found it by now. If Oprah with all her influence and resources has not been able to find the magical weight loss solution, I doubt you will be either. Leave Oprah to look for the magical weight loss pill.  You in the mean time are going to have to earn weight loss by investing time and sweat equity.

Money unfortunately is not able to buy weight loss. All the fancy slimming therapies and medical interventions will not work because these address a localized problem. Liposuction may be able to remove fat from the belly, but it will not rectify the faulty habits and thinking that got someone into that situation in the first place.

Someone looking for healthy and sustainable weight loss, needs to pay the bill in advance. The only acceptable currency is time, effort and patience. You will need to give before you get. You will have to give by exercising. You will have to give by learning about healthy eating. You will have to give by cultivating habits that help you get a leaner body. Once you  have cultivated all the right habits, you will achieve correct weight loss. For all you have given, you will get. This is an indusptable law of the universe.

Transform Me

I was talking to my friend Robert Cheeke over lunch the other day.

He said to me ‘So many people live for the 2/7ths in the life.‘
‘What do you mean?’ I asked intrigued
‘Each week we have 7/7ths to work with. So many people live for the weekend, for the 2/7th of their life‘

I sat there and thought..that is so true.

  • What am I doing?
  • Why am I wasting my life?
  • Why am I not doing what I want to do with my life/body etc.

I looked at myself in the mirror before my race this weekend and thought to myself ‘I am ready to transform myself‘. I am ready to kick some ass with my working out, get the mindless snacking that vacation has brought on and bring God’s strength into the core of who I am.

I am losing weight.
I am toning my body.
I am listening to my body.
I am kicking my own ass.

I am not going to put weight goals on what I am supposed to be doing.
I am not going to write a list of the things that I can and can’t eat.
I am not going to make lofty goals.

To transform my ass I am going to do the following:

1. WATER
2. EXERCISE
3. FOOD

That’s it. In moderation. In good proportion. For me.

I have talked about the scale, but I want to bring it back into my life..not as a tool of validation..but as a check for me each week. To show that by following those three things you can get your body at a healthy weight range.

Transform Me has begun.

Why Natural Weight Loss Can Be A Good Option

Adherence to diet for one year, not the specific diet plan, is the most significant determinant of successful weight loss.

Free Weightloss Weight Loss EBook

Anorexia and weight loss often develop and suggest a worse prognosis. Patients with severe disease experience tachypnea and respiratory disturb with naive activities. The respiratory rate increases proportionally to disease severity.
Using of accessory respiratory muscles and paradoxical indrawing of lower intercostal spaces is evident. Elevated jugular venous pulse, and peripheral edema are observed. Thoracic read-through reveals hyperinflation, diffusely decreased breath sounds, hyperresonance on percussion.

Your cravings are not your fault

Don't... eat it...

In the early twentieth century several US retailers hired a man called Edward Bernays to advise them on how to boost sales in a post war economy.

Bernays (non other than Sigmund Freud’s nephew) taught them to link the purchase of goods to people’s ego needs: status, success, prosperity, sex…

Before this, people bought things for practical purposes only. You wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes unless the pair you had were completely worn out. And most people’s food habits had nothing to do with ours today. They had more to do with survival than entertainment.

Bernays helped turn this behavior around though. He taught sales staff to make people who bought the “right” brands of food feel successful, more prosperous, sexier and more worthy. And those who bought the “wrong”  brands feel not good enough.

In today’s economy, advertisers use far more complex and subtle marketing techniques to make us buy the “right” foods, regardless of the health implications.

We are continually bombarded with subliminal and sometimes direct messages such as:

- Feeling down today? Drink this and you will feel great in no time!

- People who eat this food are more attractive…

- Only the most successful people buy this special product.

These messages are often accompanied by images and sounds that deeply anchor them in our subconscious. So, every time we see or hear the advert, or the product, an emotion is automatically triggered.

What do you feel when you hear the brand names:

  • Yorky
  • Ferrero Rocher
  • Carte D’or
  • Doritos

Every year millions of euro are invested in advertising so these messages become even more powerful. Everything, from the shape of the product, the packaging material’s flashy colours, the highly addictive ingredients… to the aisle and the shelf you find them on at the shop… everything is meticulously premeditated so you find them harder and harder to resist.

This is why fighting food cravings with will power alone is practically impossible. And this is why NLP is been proven so effective at getting to the heart of the matter, that is your subconscious, to help you bust those nasty cravings in record time.

If you have found this post helpful, feel free to post your comments or any questions you may have.

Thank you,

Anna

Weight Loss With Hypnosis

4 things that people need to consider while selecting a suitable weight loss program.

Free Weightloss Weight Loss EBook

The underlying inclination to insulin resistance is not lost, and weight loss must continue.
Overweight patients treated with metformin compared with diet alone, had relative risk reductions of 32 per cent for any diabetes endpoint, 42 per cent for diabetes related death and 36 per cent for all cause mortality and stroke.
Insulin therapy is de rigueur to maintain common or near common glucose levels.
Gestational diabetes mellitus resembles type 2 diabetes in several respects, involving a pairing of relatively inadequate insulin secretion and responsiveness.
