If you are thinking about getting those extra pounds off forever, you probably know that you are going to have to make some changes…the most obvious being eating less, and exercising more…both are true statements.
But what about your environment? My last post tackled the refrigerator and all the temptations it can house…is your kitchen ready to support you on your journey to optimal health, or is it filled with traps and potholes? Let’s take a look at what you can do to make your kitchen a “healthy haven” instead of a “calorie minefield”!
First, take a look at your pantry…if it is like most people’s, it could probably use a little thinning out. Here are a few things to get rid of:
- salty snacks like chips, and crackers (whole grain, low fat, low sodium, zero trans fats, crackers and chips are ok in moderation while maintaining your weight, but will only slow down your weight loss)
- cookies, candy, brownies, etc.
- white flour, white rice, and white bread…no matter how much you love it!
- hydrogenated oils…which might be in the fridge too…margarine, etc.
- cereals made from refined white flour
Replace those with these:
- olive and canola oil
- brown rice
- whole wheat flour
- dry roasted, unsalted nuts
- multi-grain, high fiber bread (some crackers would fit here…read the labels)
- beans, dried herbs and spices
Now, that wasn’t so bad, was it? By keeping your fridge and your pantry stocked with healthy food, you have a much better chance of reaching your goal of a healthy weight, and learning healthy habits along the way!
Other helpful tips, and these are only a few, which you may already know…
- Don’t eat standing up, walking around, in front of the TV, or on the phone…sit down at the table and enjoy the break!
- Use smaller dinner plates…literally! Smaller plates hold less food!
- Eat smaller, healthier meals more often…you’ll feel great if you do!
These changes are actually easy to make, and you will be glad you did! Now, if you have teenagers and kids in the house, this can be a challenge…but why not teach them good habits too? Healthy habits can result in a longer, more satisfying life so why not start now? What are you waiting for?
